Psych Fan Appreciation Day

October 6, 2011. New York, NY. The first annual Psych Appreciation Day and the Premiere of Episode One of Season Six at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City. (Adam David Kissick)

On the surface, Psych is…

a murder mystery show
a serialized buddy cop film
a psychic detective drama
a Will They or Won’t They?

Underneath that, it is everything you love about pop culture, television, movies, and music condensed into hour-long episodes where all genres are fair game. Horror, slapstick, sci-fi, action, romance, and thriller have all been touched upon in the five seasons thus far. And the show’s ability to mix those genres with razor sharp comedy in-between is breathtaking. Psych’s only greater skill is how they treat their fans; with more respect than any other program on the planet. The result of which was Psych Fan Appreciation Day 2011, where 500 lucky fans were given two free tickets to the premiere screening of Season Six at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York City.

Psych-Os began lining up at 2:30 for the 6:30 door opening. While waiting, patrons were greeted with take home Polaroids, foam pineapple fingers, and chances to be interviewed on camera by the incredible Andy Berman. Those four hours disintegrated into the feeling of minutes and before my wife and I knew it, we were watching creator Steve Franks walk off into the night on 55th street. Within that blur, the cast made their way across the green carpet, episode 601 was screened, a Q&A was had, and many foam footballs were launched into the audience by the cast. Besides managing to grab seats in the front row, the surprise highlight of the night was sharing the theater with Phylicia Rashād, Dana Ashbrook, and Ally Sheedy. Icing upon a cake baked entirely with delicious flavor.

Here’s hoping that this is the first of many Psych events to come and thank you Steve Franks, for creating the TV equivalent of my favorite record. You are a genius.

Here are some photos from the day…

SPARKcon 2011

September 17, 2011. Raleigh, NC. SPARKcon 2011 is the 6th annual convention that gathers together and showcases the creative and artistic talent of the Triangle of North Carolina. (Adam David Kissick)

Another reason to love Raleigh = SPARKcon, a celebration of art & culture in The Triangle. Though it is a multi-day event including a fashion show, movie screenings and more, my schedule allowed for roughly two hours of capture time on Saturday afternoon before I had to head home, edit the photos for the paper deadline, and pack for a trip to NYC extremely early the next morning. More on that later…

Upon arriving on the streets, I was instantly greeted with a roving gang of colorfully dressed dancers waving bananas in the air and any worries of bad weather effecting the photo opportunities instantly vanished from my brain. Before I knew it, I was back at home editing the 1,000+ photos of musicians, dancers, street artists, and skateboarders. I can’t wait to be able to free up my calendar for the 2012 edition.

Burning Coal Theatre Company: Wonder of the World

August 7, 2011. Raleigh, N.C.. Kathryn LeTrent and Olivia Griego play the roles of Cass and Lois in the Burning Coal Theatre Company production of Wonder of the World. (Adam David Kissick)

As promised, more theather! In stark contrast to the full tech rehearsal I got to be a part of for Dog Sees God, my experience with Wonder of the World was a quick 20 minute, three scene run through with two cast members. Sets? A Fence. A Barrel. A Bed. Luckily, I got a lot of great emotion to work with to liven up the minimal black box theater.

Ether Steeds @ The JC Raulston Arboretum

Stillwater Theatre presents the regional premiere of Ether Steeds by North Carolina native Jason Williamson at The JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, N.C., Saturday, May 28, 2011. The play tells the story of Skeeta, a young girl growing up in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. (Adam David Kissick)

Today brings two more posts of local Raleigh theater that I shot for the NC/triangle based newspaper, the Independent Weekly. I began working with them back at the end of May and this was one of the first gigs assigned. My time with the Independent has been wonderful so far and it has gotten me out to see many local scenes I would have been oblivious to, without their help. I will be featuring a few more galleries over the next month or so, but for now enjoy more pictures of Ether Steeds and view the full gallery here.

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead

June 22, 2011. Raleigh, NC.. The Raleigh Ensemble Players perform DOG SEES GOD: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead. Photograph from a rehearsal. (Adam David Kissick)

“It is the mission of the Raleigh Ensemble Players Theatre Company (REP) to produce penetrating theatrical experiences that stir, inspire and awaken, and invite us to confront and explore issues at the heart of the human experience.”

I got to witness this mission statement intimately during a rehearsal performance of Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead by the Raleigh Ensemble Players. My usual performance photography experience puts me in front of the stage, behind the 4th wall, ready to capture the programmed event. This production throws the viewer literally into the set. The seats are on the stage and the actors occasionally sit right next to you. Therefore, the approach of capturing the action as close as possible was necessary to convey to means of the production. Newlyweds @ The Tribeca Film Festival

Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower attend the Tribeca Film Festival Premiere of Newlyweds (Adam David Kissick)

Do supermodels hang out with actors or do actors hang out with supermodels? Or do both parties just get an anonymous tip to show up at an undisclosed location with a note saying – your future depends on it. Either way, the prerequisite for the premiere of Newlyweds was probably a check box RSVP card that looked like this:

[   ] ACTOR
[   ] MODEL
[   ] OTHER (aka – stay at home, unless your name is The Edge)
